He was pretending to be dumb (like his character on the show ‘friends’). so since the underwear was a gift he expected it to have his name on it, “matt” nont “ellen.” however, the black underwear (known as “the ellen underwear) have the word “ellen” written on the waist band (that name never changes), hence the joke.
